In September 2005, over 2,400 Americans who live with lifelong disabilities, their family members, and the people who work along side of them came together in Washington, DC, to participate in a ground-breaking Summit. Sponsored by eleven national organizations, including CQL, the Summit’s purpose was to engage people from every state and every walk of life to talk about how to create a world with full participation for all. At the Summit, individuals heard panel presentations, engaged in a dialogue and had a chance to vote in order to add their voice to the conversation about how to improve the lives of individuals with disabilities.
The Alliance for Full Participation, through a grant from the Social Security Administration, has developed a DVD and discussion guide so that the conversation that began in Washington DC can continue in communities across the country.
The DVD includes four separate video sections:
- Highlights: An overview of the Summit, its purpose and goals.
- General Barriers to Full Participation: Full participation requires community involvement and engagement across many levels. This video provides a high level look at the challenges facing individuals working to achieve full participation.
- Employment: Employing people with disabilities offers both challenges and opportunities. This video features panelists from Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, Byron S. Adams Legal and Commercial Printers, and MBNA, sharing the practices and policies that make their employment programs a success.
- Direct Support Professionals: It requires a dedicated staff of support professionals to make the dream of full participation a reality. This video highlights the role of the direct support professional and outlines some of the challenges that impact these individuals’ effectiveness.
